I have been a nonni for almost two weeks now and I know why old people don’t have babies. It’s a lot of work. Time lets you forget just how much work.
On Saturday Nolan made his first trip to Babies R Us. I went with his mommy to carry heavy stuff and help keep her relaxed if he got fussy. Babies do sometimes cry and poop when they are out in public. It’s part of their charm.
Well let me tell you, these new fangled car seats are insane. I swear after the 10 minutes it took to get his arms bent in there, his shoulder straps and pads on, and his crotch squished I was not sure it was worth taking a baby anywhere. He was strapped in so tight he could have driven Nascar or flown into space. Don’t get me wrong, I want my little grand babies safe and protected when out on the road, but if we ever had to get this kid out of this seat fast it would be damn close to impossible.
AND it didn’t end there. We then had to carry the whole seat down to the truck and snap it into the car seat base. Uh huh. I carried it, I put it on the base, and I heard a click. Thought all was ok until my daughter said he was leaning to one side. Both of us being complete novices we assumed the seat did not go into the base correctly. So we tried to take it off and start over. We tried and we tried, then we tried some more and one more time, two more times. Finally thanks to the power of the internet, my daughter was able to read how to get the seat off the base. I was absolutely useless, and after all that the seat was in correctly, it just looked like it was leaning.
Over all the trip went very well, once we got the stroller open and the seat attached that is. I swear it was a much easier life when you just picked the kid up and carried them everywhere. No belts, no straps, no buckles…just good ole fashioned blanket and arms. Yes as you can tell I have turned into an official grandmother. “In my day we just blah blah blah”
It really is all new for me. It has been 23 years since I had a newborn and things have changed so much in that period of time. I feel like I have no clue. Well I guess I can learn. The most important things are loving, hugging, kissing, and spoiling. I think that’s what the nonni manual says, and that’s what I plan on doing.
