In the last couple of weeks I have had some of the strangest dreams. Dreams that I remember after waking and days later. Not sure what they mean, but they have a similar theme. Dogs; my dogs.
The first was about two weeks ago. It was summer and my husband and I were invited to a party/cookout at some “friends”. In the dream we knew these people. They were not the type of people we usually hang out with, but in the dream we were friends. In real life I have no clue who these people were.
So the party was outside but we could not bring our dog Coco. I told everyone I was going to hook her up to a tree “up by the old police station”. Now what is really weird is the neighborhood was the one that I lived in when I was young. As in under 10 years old-young. There is and wasn’t a police station where I supposedly hooked my poor Coco up, and it was blocks away from where the party was. I vaguely remember the party but that was not the focus of the dream. That came after, when one of the “friends” walked with me to get Coco. Only Coco was nowhere to be found. Her tie out was still hooked to the tree and her collar was attached to the tie out, but she was not there.
I ran around like a crazy woman calling for her. Dogs started popping up from some tall grass, like the moles in that arcade game, but no Coco. I called and called and called, but she never came. I woke up in a panic, sweating and breathing like I had just run a marathon. Heartbroken, that in the dream, I had lost my Coco and realizing in real life time she was also gone.
Almost two and a half years ago we had to put her down because of respiratory failure. She had been passing out due to lack of oxygen and the vet said nothing more could be done. So we let her go. To this day I regret it. I feel I should have done more. I feel I let her down. Today her ashes sit on my bureau along with Deogi, one of our other dogs, who we lost quite suddenly in 2004.
That was the first of the dog dreams. Tomorrow I will share the second. For now I will leave you with my Coco Marie.
